In an office furniture market where mesh chairs exude "cheapness" and traditional leather chairs feel "bulky," Italian brand TOMU has broken the mold by positioning itself as the "premier brand for genuine leather ergonomic chairs." Within a year of launching, its products swept three international awards, including the German Design Award , becoming the new favorite among mid-to-high-end users.Driven by curiosity about TOMU's success, we interviewed TOMU's Chief Designer Evan to uncover the logic behind integrating genuine leather with ergonomic design.
A Conversation with the Designer
Host: Among numerous seating brands, why did TOMU steadfastly choose imported top-grain cowhide as its core material? What significance does it hold for the product?
Evan: Genuine leather is a living material, and top-grain cowhide is its soul. Office chairs are products we spend an extraordinary amount of time in daily. During overtime, we often spend more hours in our chairs than in bed. Therefore, selecting comfortable upholstery for these intimate companions is crucial. The exceptional feel and texture of imported top-grain cowhide speak for themselves—anyone who's touched it knows.

Naturally, we select leather based on each chair's specific characteristics. Some models use thicker leather to enhance the fullness of the seat, while others feature premium, ultra-thin leather to emphasize supple tactility.
Every TOMU chair possesses its own distinct character. We introduce new models slowly, having refined only a dozen or so office chair designs over several years. Each one is developed with deep dedication, each a timeless classic.
Similarly, the leather selection for each model undergoes rigorous testing and elimination, ultimately choosing the perfect "soul" leather that complements the product's aesthetics and functionality. Together, they deliver an enhanced seating experience and longer-lasting value.
Host: As the premier brand for genuine leather ergonomic chairs, what innovations does TOMU bring to ergonomic design? How do you balance support and comfort?
Evan: For office chairs, ergonomic design primarily focuses on enhancing comfort in key areas: the head, neck, shoulders, waist, hips, legs, and dynamic mechanisms.
In these areas, TOMU features: - A "three-stage bionic structure" for lumbar support - A "3D pressure-distribution cushion" for the hips - A "cloud-sensing adaptive base" for dynamic mechanisms - An "180° rebound lumbar pillow" specifically for the lower back - "Leather-carved perforated design" for skin comfort "150° suspension pressure-free adjustment" for reclining rest,

We tailor ergonomic designs to each product's usage scenarios, adhering to functional applicability principles while prioritizing physical comfort over excessive technical showmanship.
Host: What design philosophy and ingenuity underpin the aesthetic of TOMU genuine leather ergonomic chairs?
Evan: I summarize TOMU's aesthetic philosophy as: "Power lies within minimalism; beauty hides beneath
functionality." It neither pursues visual extravagance nor functional diversity alone, but constructs a modern office aesthetic blending order, strength, technology, and elegance through structural language, CMFP aesthetics, material precision, and meticulous craftsmanship.
I believe aesthetics transcends mere visuals—it embodies a sense of precision.Every curve, chamfer, and proportion in our structural design prioritizes ergonomics while pursuing industrial precision and sculptural quality. We eschew traditional luxury and cold tech aesthetics, instead creating "Intelligent Sensory Aesthetics"—a harmonious coexistence of technological sophistication and artistic expression. Examples include the uniquely styled T07 Cyberki chair---- the floating leather chair "G01 Gralev Chair", and the symbol of rights "Y06 Crown Chair"

Ultimately, we envision TOMU establishing an office aesthetic that harmonizes strength and elegance through sculptural simplicity, meticulously crafted materials, and functional logic.
Host: TOMU has garnered numerous prestigious international awards in recent years, including last year's French Design Awards and American Good Design Award, as well as this year's German Design Award Gold Prize and China Red Cotton Supreme Award. What do these honors mean for the brand and team?

Evan: These trophies belong to the entire Chinese R&D team! It's their dedication and ingenuity that have enabled Italian design to be precisely adapted for Asian body types. These awards represen`t high recognition of our design, craftsmanship, and quality, while also motivating us to continuously push boundaries, pursue higher standards, and deliver more premium products to users.
Host: Regarding TOMU's future development, what plans do you have for product R&D?
Evan: We conducted extensive data research revealing that different demographics have entirely distinct needs for office chairs. Sometimes these needs even conflict—no single chair can satisfy everyone. Therefore, our goal is to develop products tailored to specific user groups.Currently, we offer over a dozen models catering to diverse user groups, covering the needs of most workplace professionals.
Recently, we've expanded into gaming leather chairs and plan to introduce more specialized products. Guided by our brand's human-centered philosophy, we aim to serve not only the mainstream market but also address the needs of niche groups—whether for office work, reading, meetings, or short breaks—within our capabilities.
