Designer
Lucas Romano

Born in Milan, Italy, TOMU’s Chief Design Director. With two decades of experience in high-end furniture design, he believes that “design is the balance between function and poetry.” He brings a deep fusion of century-old Italian leather craftsmanship and modern office aesthetics to TOMU, adhering to a “less is more” philosophy and instilling a signature Italian elegance into every piece.

Designer
Xu Hong Yi

From Guangzhou, China, TOMU’s Product Development Director. An ergonomics specialist with a Ph.D. in Industrial Design, he excels at translating scientific data into comfortable experiences, convinced that “a chair is the second skin of the body.” His partnership with Lucas forms the dual core of TOMU—where Italian art meets Egonomic science.

Redefining — TOMU's Ultimate Pursuit

Aesthetics
“Every chair is a reinterpretation of timeless beauty—not chasing trends, but creating a design language that transcends time. From the rhythmic lines of Italian classical architecture to the philosophy of modern minimalism, TOMU transforms beauty into tangible daily experiences.”
Comforts
“The human body is not a machine, and work should not be a struggle. We integrate authoritative spinal health research with anthropometric data from populations, ensuring each chair not only supports but anticipates—every forward lean, every reclining moment, every stretch of focused work.”
Luxury
“Luxury is not about ostentation—it is the humble commitment to detail. Hand-stitching tolerances within 0.5mm, each piece of Italian top-grain leather naturally tanned for 90 days, metal components finished with 24-layer plating—these unseen commitments form the very texture of TOMU luxury.”
Safety
“Safety is not a checklist of specifications—it is the dual assurance of physical and psychological well-being. Every design undergoes 200,000 durability test cycles; every screw’s torque is meticulously recorded. Because true peace of mind comes from trust that requires no second thought.”

Breaking Boundaries — Dialogue and Exploration in Design

Every breakthrough is an embodiment of TOMU's design philosophy: never compromising on a single value, but seeking the optimal solution across multiple dimensions.

The Debate on Lines —— Curves or Right Angles?
“During the development of the EXPLORER series, Lucas insisted on "sail-like flowing curves," while Xu Yi advocated for "scientifically calibrated curves matching the natural curvature of the spine." After three months of prototyping iterations, they found the perfect balance: the macro lines of the backrest retain their poetic flow, while the micro-curvature of the lumbar support precisely aligns with the L3-L5 lumbar vertebrae—where art and science reach a harmonious resolution.”
The Choice of Mechanism —— Static Stability or Dynamic Following?
“In the early stages of the PIONEER series design, the team diverged on the base mechanism. The traditional four-prong base offered greater stability, while the new synchronous mechanism enabled "the chair follows the body." Ultimately, we selected an intelligent linear mechanism system: Work Mode provides firm and stable support, while Rest Mode enables intelligent following—allowing heroes to both command with authority and strike with agility.”
The Leather Que —— Softness vs. Support
“During the leather selection phase for the CROWN series, we tested 12 varieties of Italian leather with different thicknesses and treatments. Leather that was too soft offered excellent enveloping comfort but lacked sufficient support, while overly firm leather compromised comfort. The final selection—a 2mm naturally tanned full-grain leather—holds its secret in unique "mid-layer memory fibers," delivering both cloud-like softness and invisible, resilient support.”
The Structural Revolution —— Exposed Screws or Hidden Elegance?
“The GLALEV series faced an assembly challenge: too many screws would mar the aesthetics, while too few could compromise structural safety. In collaboration with a German engineering team, we developed the "Invisible Skeleton System": primary load-bearing structures utilize aerospace-grade mortise-and-tenon joints, while critical stress points are reinforced with hidden hex screws—making assembly effortless and preserving flawless elegance.”

Craftsmanship — The Journey from Sketch to Sensation

Phase 1: 300 Sketches, One Direction
“Each series begins in Lucas’s sketchbook. Before the EXPLORER series was born, he drew 47 iterations of the “sail” armrest design. The PIONEER series’ spider-web backrest evolved through 12 stages from figurative to abstract. Every discarded sketch is a necessary step toward the final answer.”
Phase 2: 1:1 Clay Models & Body Scanning
“We insist on full-scale clay models because three-dimensional presence cannot be fully captured on screen. Designers work with 10 testers of different body types, using professional scanners to record seating postures and adjust curves by millimeters—true comfort lies in the body’s unconscious relaxation.”
Phase 3: 168 Hours of Hand-Stitching Training
“Every TOMU seamstress undergoes a three-week leather stitching apprenticeship before touching a production piece. They learn to follow the natural grain of the leather, to make saddle-stitching as consistent as machinery—yet infused with human warmth.”
Phase 4: 30 Days of “Living Together”
“Before mass production, each chair spends a month in a real office environment—living with the design team. Observing morning postures, afternoon fatigue, late-night demands—these daily nuances, uncaptured by data, inform the final refinements.”
